I just received a copy of the Ishay "Human Rights Reader" (Routledge) from Amazon.com today. Can't wait to read it. It's useful to remember the fundamentals every now and again. I used to do volunteer work for Amnesty International when I was in high school. Maybe I should start doing that again.
The hijab is a very touchy subject in Norway these days. There are a lot of sudden feminists here now. You know: people who are outraged -outraged! - at the outrageousness of what these poor Moslem women are subjected to, and want to make the hijab illegal. You know: to protect democracy. Me? I detect the aroma of rat, and I don't mean Mikkel.

yeah -- I probably should have been careful about kicking this series off with such a politically charged image -- but hell, what's done is done. ;)
ReplyDeleteWell, she's got her rights either way. That's easy to forget in all the hubbub.
