There's a four-year-old Arlo who's sometimes waiting outside the school with his mother when we pick up Thumper's cousins after school. He's the king of the non sequiter, and he often asks me very sweetly for permission to do things like kick a stone or gather twigs into a pile. Somehow he seems the quintessence of Arlo-ness to me now.
