awkward silence

I never know whether to be flattered or insulted when someone repeats back to me -- as if it was their original idea -- something that I've said before to them.

Clearly they thought it was clever enough to appropriate; but I suspect -- if they're giving it back to me as though it's the first time I've heard it -- that they don't think I'm clever enough to have thought of it.

I normally force myself to feel flattered in this situation (that they took the idea and ran with it) even though inside I'd rather be insulted. Obviously they've forgotten, I don't think anyone would commit this faux pas intentionally. Doesn't make it suck any less though.

I confess, I've committed this sin on more than one occasion. Only, when I repeat it I usually preface it with an "I heard" or "someone once told me" and then screw it up in some way so it falls far short of the originator's intent. I attribute it to a spectacular lack of short term memory skills and not really listening very carefully in the first place. So if I ever do (have done) this to you suttonhoo, feel free to say *that was me you idiot*.

lol -- it wasn't you opiliones. I would call you on it in a minute. ;)

no -- this was a more casual acquaintance. and it's happened before. just felt like bitching.

I do what you do, Patrick: try to feign the feeling of being flattered. ;)

OMG, it was me, wasn't it? Now I'll have to stop drinking, or speaking.

too funny, I do this all the time and I get super angry when people do it to me (conveniently forgetting that I do it all the time)
