death or glory

My godson was in Chicagoland over the weekend to play in an Ultimate Frisbee Tournament. His team -- Death or Glory (DoG) out of Boston -- successfully decimated the competition.

I got to watch -- which sent me into all kinds of fond reverie re high school crushes and Ultimate-playing boyfriends -- and take some pics, which was just what I needed to keep my mind off the plunging temperatures and the fact that I'm friggin' old enough now to have a 24-year old godson. (How did that happen?)

Here's a link to slideshow featuring some pics from the game »

something you'll appreciate ...

during the roman empire, when they were at the strongest, they'd give territories in question the option of surrendering ... if the territory refused, and decided to fight, when the romans won (and they nearly always did), they would line up all the citizens, giving them repeating numbers 1-to-10 ... a lot with a number was then drawn, and every person matching that number was killed ... hence "decimation."

(a similar ploy was used against cowardly or mutinous soldiers.)

oh and ...

one time i was sitting at a management class at apple and we're going around the room introducing ourselves ...

one guy says, "i'm irv kalb" and as it goes on around the room, i can't shake it ... i know this name ... i know this name ...

about 10 minutes later, and before i can stop myself, i blurt out, right over the top of someone else's introduction, "JESUS CHRIST! YOU'RE DOCTOR I!"

it was, in fact, the guy that invented ultimate frisbee.

i grabbed him at the break.

"you're the only person in my life that has ever recognized me for that," he said.

"i'm the only person who ever needed to," i replied.

and as long as i'm at it ...

just for the record, jim s. was a spectacular player with the heart of a lion. it was an honor and a joy to play with him.

he did have the heart of a lion. I bet he still does.

tell you what: you guys were amazing to watch. something gritty and real there. this was good stuff over the weekend, but you guys were something else.

and yeah: LOVED the decimated backgrounder -- thanks -- and the doctor story.

"Death or glory... becomes just another story. Death or glory... becomes just another story."

will be singing that for the rest of the day, in fact will put it on the stereo now.

Great photos! I have to admit most Ultimate Frisbee players I have met were total wankers and have tainted my view of the sport by association.
