stuck in a groove

Confession: I have the bad habit of looping CDs over and over and over again. Especially when I’m on a deadline. You’d think I could just commit to iTunes shuffle and let it have its way with me, spinning me all over the musical spectrum that is my iPod. But for some reason I can’t do that. Sometimes I’ll shuffle through a genre. But mostly I stick with an Artist. Just the artist. Everything I might have by that one individual, but just that one.

I don’t know why that is, but there’s something about the groove and the pacing that reassures me and helps me stay on track.

Tonight there’s a deadline, and Otis Taylor is seeing me through. He’s been with me since Noon, and he’ll stay up with me past Midnight. I’m shuffling off just a couple of his CDs -- Respect the Dead and Double V – but if things get hairy I’ll make a trip to my friends at Apple and ask them for just a little bit more.

Because Otis is the friend I need tonight.

(Have you heard this guy? You won’t be sorry. Promise.)

I LOVE Otis! Charley brought him home last week, because he reminded him of Joe-Henry. He's been on my iPod all week, too!

Hey I listen to the same thing over and over too. When I had a car and chauffered my friends, it used to drive them crazy.

Will have to check out Otis Taylor, name familiar but that's it.

you're brave to go public with it, lola -- I had some hesitation, knowing there are folks out there who will scorn me for it. ;)

I will say that I'm pretty good about recycling whole CDs rather than single tracks. My sister got a thing going for a Samantha Sang song (Emotion, written by the Bee Gees) when we were in jr high school -- she played it over and over and over again -- which took some doing, since it was an LP, and she had to man the turntable and actually move the needle every time she wanted to hear it again. I still give her grief about that. it just about drove me crazy.

I do the same thing with deadlines! If I have to write something fairly intensive, I tend to pull out some old stuff and play them repeatedly. I remember during law school while writing papers, I'd do that with Alexander O'Neal and Al B. Sure!

slowly I'm beginning to feel like less and less of a freak. ;)

That's not a bad habit -- it's a necessity: let it in, let it breathe. Otherwise it'll spin right over you. How do you think I became such a normal, well-adjusted person? Oh...
